Why CC0 Matters: The License That Makes Game Dev Simpler

Most “free” 3D models come with an invisible price: license anxiety. Can I use this commercially? Do I have to credit someone in my Steam description? What if I modify it? CC0 exists to delete all of those questions, and this post explains how.

What CC0 actually is

CC0 is not a license with conditions. It is a public domain dedication. The creator waives all copyright and related rights, worldwide, to the extent legally possible. There is no fine print because there are no terms.

In practice: use Grab3D models in commercial games, trailers, prints, ads. Modify them, kitbash them, retexture them. Redistribute them, even on your own asset site. Never credit anyone (though we won’t stop you). Sell your game for money without owing us anything, ever.

”Royalty-free” is not the same thing

Marketplace models sold as royalty-free still have a license agreement, usually pages of it. Typical restrictions: no redistribution as an asset, per-seat limits, editorial-only clauses, revocation rights. Royalty-free means “no recurring fees,” not “no rules.”

CC-BY (used by many free platforms) requires attribution in a specific format. That is manageable for one model, but genuinely painful when your game jam project uses forty assets from twelve creators.

CC0 has none of that. It is the only license where the answer to every “am I allowed to…?” question is simply yes.

Why we chose it (the honest version)

Two reasons. First, the practical one: our High Detail models start as AI image-to-3D drafts before they are corrected in Blender (how we make our models), and purely AI-generated works have an unsettled copyright status in most jurisdictions anyway: the US Copyright Office holds that they are not protectable. CC0 turns that legal gray zone into an explicit, reliable promise: whatever rights may exist, we waive them. You get certainty instead of a gamble.

Second, the strategic one: CC0 is why Poly Haven, ambientCG and Kenney became beloved institutions rather than just websites. Trust compounds. Every developer who ships a game with our models and never once worries about licensing tells another developer.

The one thing CC0 doesn’t give you

You cannot claim exclusive rights over the unmodified models, for example by registering them as your own original work to stop others from using them. The public domain stays public. Everything else: go build.

Every model on Grab3D is released under this dedication. The license page has the details. No account, no attribution, no asterisks.
