FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Licenses, downloads, engines, quality tiers, rigs and how Grab3D works: short, honest answers.
License & use
Are the models really free?
Yes. Every model is released under CC0 1.0 (public domain). No payment, no account, no download limits and no premium tier. Details: CC0 license explained.
Can I use them in commercial games?
Yes. CC0 allows commercial use in games, apps, renders and client work. Sell your game, put it on Steam or a console store. You owe us nothing.
Do I have to credit Grab3D?
No. Attribution is not required. A link is welcome, but entirely optional.
Do I need to disclose AI content on Steam?
It depends on the model. Some of our models are AI-assisted: the base mesh and textures come from an AI image-to-3D tool and are then cleaned up and checked in Blender (131 of the models online). The others are built procedurally with Blender scripts (672 models): no AI model produced their geometry or textures, but the scripts were written with the help of an AI coding assistant. We don’t label this on the model pages, but every download package states it: see the section “Origin / AI disclosure” in LICENSE.txt and the origin field in manifest.json (the technical details on each model page link to both files). If you ship an AI-assisted model in your game, it counts as content created with the help of AI tools, and Steam asks you to disclose that in the AI section of its content survey. For procedural models the files note the AI-assisted scripts (ai_assisted_code in manifest.json), so you can answer correctly if a platform asks about AI anywhere in the creation process. The rules: Steamworks content survey, section 3 (AI content). Other stores may have their own rules.
Can I modify and redistribute the models?
Yes. Recolor, remesh, kitbash and share them, also on your own site. CC0 covers our copyright only: it does not grant trademark rights, so don’t present your project as endorsed by Grab3D.
Downloads & formats
Which file formats do you offer?
Every model comes as GLB, FBX, .blend, USDZ and OBJ: GLB for Godot, Blender and the web, FBX for Unity and Unreal, .blend with packed textures, USDZ for AR Quick Look on Apple devices and OBJ zipped with MTL and textures. All files use real-world meters with the pivot at the base, and each model page lists exactly which files exist and how large they are.
Do I need an account? Are there download limits?
No and no. Every download is a direct link: no login, no email, no limits.
Why are some downloads so large?
High Detail models have up to hundreds of thousands of triangles and 4K textures, and every download is stored without mesh compression so it opens in any engine without extra plugins (median GLB 26 MB, median FBX 46 MB for the models online). Only the 3D preview on this website is Draco-compressed so it loads fast. Need smaller files? Take the lighter GLB/FBX where one exists, or compress the GLB yourself with gltf-transform. Lightweight models are small in every format. Measured numbers: file sizes by format.
Can I 3D print the models?
The license allows it. We don’t offer STL files and haven’t checked the models for printability (wall thickness, closed shells), so plan to repair and export them yourself, for example in Blender.
Game engines
How do I use the models in Unity?
The FBX imports natively. For GLB you need a glTF package (glTFast or UnityGLTF). No download uses Draco compression, so you don’t need Unity’s Draco package. Step by step: Unity import guide.
Do the models work in Godot?
Yes. Godot 4 imports every GLB we offer natively, including High Detail models and rigged characters, because the downloads are not Draco-compressed. Drag the GLB into the FileSystem dock. The FBX works too (native in Godot 4.3+). Guide: importing into Godot 4.
And in Unreal Engine?
Use the FBX. It is in real-world meters, so Unreal shows a 1.75 m character as about 175 cm. If a model arrives at the wrong size, check the import scale. Rigged variants import as a skeletal mesh with their animations.
Quality tiers
What is the difference between High Detail and Lightweight?
High Detail (102 models online): high-resolution PBR models with 4K textures and 71,906–831,942 triangles, made for close-ups, renders and hero assets (some are rigged). Lightweight (701 models online): stylized models with mostly 2K or palette textures and 1,180–49,550 triangles, ready to drop into a game.
What is the lighter GLB/FBX, and are there LODs?
235 models offer a lighter GLB/FBX with roughly half the triangles and 1K textures. It is built only where it removes at least 30 % of the triangles, saves GPU and memory and is a much smaller download (for High Detail models the lighter GLB is a median 44 % of the full one). We don’t ship LOD chains: use the lighter file, a low poly version where one exists, or your own LODs.
Rigs & animations
Which models are rigged, and with which animations?
24 models have a rigged variant: Samurai, Alien, Armored Knight, Businessman, Casual Man, Casual Woman, Chef, Child, Doctor, Elderly Man, Farmer, Firefighter, Human Muscles, Human Skeleton, Nurse, Police Officer, Robot, Sci-Fi Soldier, Soldier, Stone Golem, Stylized Zombie, Viking, Werewolf and Wizard. Each has a humanoid skeleton with 24 bones (no finger or face bones) and two in-place clips, walk and run, as GLB, FBX and .blend. You find the download on the model page.
Can I use my own animations with the rig?
Yes, with some work. The bones use common humanoid names (Hips, Spine, LeftUpLeg …), so Unity’s Humanoid avatar can map them, and in Unreal you can retarget via IK Rig and IK Retargeter. The rigs are created automatically, so check deformation at shoulders and hips. Walkthrough: rigged characters in Unity, Godot and Unreal.
Browser tools
What are the free tools on Grab3D?
Recolor Studio, Character Mixer, Kit Builder, Draw to 3D, Sprite Sheet Generator and Turntable Renderer. They run entirely in your browser, need no account and export files you can use under CC0. Overview: all tools.
Wishes & contact
Can I request a model?
Yes. Email your wish to info@grab3d.com or add it to the wish board. The board is still in demo mode: entries are saved only in your browser until the shared board goes live, so email is the reliable way for now. Published results are CC0 like everything else.
How are the models made?
Many start as an AI-generated draft from a reference image and are then corrected in Blender. Our kits are built procedurally by scripts in Blender. Every model is checked from four angles and its exports are verified. The full workflow: how our 3D models are made.
I found an error in a model. What now?
Please write to info@grab3d.com with the model name and what you noticed. We check it and fix the model or take it offline.
Why is Grab3D free? What’s the catch?
There is none. A free library is the whole point, and downloads will never move behind a paywall. Later, unobtrusive ads or optional services such as custom models may help cover the costs.
