Behind the Scenes

How Our 3D Models Are Made

We don’t stick an “AI” or “made in Blender” label on individual models. Instead, every model carries a quality tier (High Detail or Lightweight), because that is what decides whether it fits your project. This article explains how the models get there. The full, step-by-step description lives on our transparency page.

Two ways a model starts

AI draft, then corrected in Blender (High Detail). Our High Detail models (animals, creatures, characters, anatomy and some sci-fi pieces) start as a draft from an AI image-to-3D generator, guided by a reference image prepared for each subject. The raw result is never published as it comes out: every one goes through the Blender correction described below.

Built procedurally in Blender (Lightweight). Our kit pieces are built by Python scripts in Blender: shapes, materials, a fixed palette and proportions are defined as code, with weathering baked into the PBR textures. That is why all pieces of a kit share one look. Moving parts such as lids, doors, wheels or a trebuchet arm are separate objects with sensible pivots, so you can animate them in your engine.

A third route connects the two: low poly versions of some High Detail models are derived in Blender from the detailed original. A wolf becomes a low poly wolf with its own page, a few thousand flat-shaded triangles and a small palette texture that carries the original’s colors.

The correction in Blender

  • Scale and placement: real-world size in meters, pivot at the base center, model standing upright on the ground.
  • Geometry cleanup: duplicate fragments and tiny splinters removed, holes handled carefully (functional openings stay open), noisy generated surfaces smoothed after the triangle count is reduced, typically to around 800,000 triangles for the download.
  • Textures: PBR maps (base color, roughness, metallic, normal), re-encoded as 4K for the download and 2K for the web preview.
  • Rigging: selected two-legged characters get an automatic humanoid rig with in-place walk and run clips, offered as a separate rigged download. The rigged character guide shows what that rig can and can’t do.
  • Lighter files: for models with many triangles there is an extra GLB/FBX with roughly half the triangles and 1K textures, but only when it removes at least 30 % of the triangles. It saves memory at runtime, but for High Detail models it is not a smaller download (see the file-size measurements).

Checks before anything goes live

Every model is rendered from four angles under neutral studio light and looked at, because a single view hides too much. We look for floating or tilted models, holes, dark patches, detached parts, the wrong front and anything missing compared with the reference. Then all download formats are exported from one master GLB, re-imported and compared: dimensions, triangle count, ground contact, textures. A model is only published once its previews exist and its texts are complete in English, German and Spanish. Everything else stays unpublished.

What you get

Every model comes as GLB, FBX, .blend, USDZ and OBJ. The downloads carry no Draco compression, so every file opens directly in Godot, Unity, Unreal and Blender. Only the 3D preview on the site is Draco-compressed so it loads fast. The format guide explains which file fits your engine. Triangle counts, dimensions and file sizes on the site are read from the files, not estimated.

Why a tier instead of a label

High Detail means high-resolution PBR models with 4K textures, some of them rigged, made for close-ups, renders and hero assets rather than for crowds. Lightweight means stylized models with 2K or palette textures that are ready to drop into a game. That tells you more about whether a model fits your scene than which tool made its first draft.
