02About Jetstorm

Soldat is a fast 2D shooter in side view by Michał Marcinkowski, first released in 2002. Soldiers run, roll, crawl and fly with jetpacks across maps made of floating polygons, with realistic ballistics, ragdoll physics and a large arsenal. Its code was later released as open source and lives on as OpenSoldat.

Jetstorm (working title) is a remake for the browser. The game logic of OpenSoldat, from the physics to the bot AI with its waypoints, was translated from the original Pascal source. You play Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch or Capture the Flag against bots on 15 maps of OpenSoldat base 0.4, with ten primary weapons from twin pistols, assault rifle and shotgun to sniper rifle and minigun, plus pistol, combat knife, chainsaw, rocket launcher and grenades. Jetstorm is not affiliated with Transhuman Design or the OpenSoldat project.

Similar on Grab3D: Abuse (Run and gun platformer) and Tyrian (Vertical shoot 'em up).

03Tips for your first game of Jetstorm

  1. Hold the right mouse button or Space for the jetpack. It refills while you stand on the ground.
  2. Crouch with S while running to roll. Crouching makes you a smaller target.
  3. Hold E longer to throw a grenade farther. Q switches between your two weapons, R reloads.
  4. The bots have four levels from Easy to Elite. On a touch screen the first match starts on Easy.
  5. Tab shows the scoreboard, M switches the sound off and on, Esc opens the menu.

04What was remastered for the browser

Improvements only touch the picture and the controls. Game logic and speed stay as in the original.

  • Game logic translated 1:1 from the OpenSoldat Pascal source to TypeScript: physics, weapons, bullets, ragdolls and the bot AI with its waypoints.
  • A fixed clock of 60 steps per second like the original. The picture is interpolated up to 144 Hz, so faster screens never speed up the game.
  • HD rendering with WebGL, light from muzzle flashes and explosions and new particle effects, on top of the original graphics and sounds.
  • Keyboard and mouse, gamepad and touch controls for phones and tablets, with an aim assist for sticks that can be switched off.
  • Family friendly by default: little blood and no dismemberment. Blood can be switched off completely in the settings.
  • Attract mode: the bots fight behind the main menu. Four bot levels from Easy to Elite.
  • Starts in German on the German page, in English otherwise.
